How the exchange rate works
The European Central Bank (ECB) publishes a daily reference rate based on averages across major banks - but it’s not a rate you can use directly.
Instead, when you make a payment abroad, it goes through a card scheme like Mastercard. They set their own exchange rates, which often differ slightly from the ECB rate.
